Convert TAR.BZ2 to ZIP free and private, in your browser
To convert TAR.BZ2 to ZIP free and private, drag your .tar.bz2, .tbz2 or .tbz file onto the converter above (or click it to browse), keep ZIP selected and press Convert to ZIP. The bzip2 layer is decompressed, the TAR inside is unpacked and everything is repacked as a ZIP inside your browser, with a download named after the file: survey-data.tar.bz2 becomes survey-data.zip. Nothing is uploaded, and the Network tab in DevTools will show it.
A .tar.bz2 (also .tbz2 or .tbz) is a TAR bundle compressed with bzip2, the Burrows–Wheeler compressor Julian Seward released in 1996. It usually compresses text better than gzip but more slowly, and for years it was a common choice for source releases, scientific data sets and backups that still sit on mirrors. In our test, the 32 files of the react-dom 18.3.1 npm package were 776 KB as .tar.bz2 and 1.15 MB as ZIP, about 1.5 times larger.
The same engine handles the neighbouring formats: TAR.GZ to ZIP, TAR.XZ to ZIP and plain TAR to ZIP. As of October 2026, Windows 11 opens .tar.bz2 in File Explorer (since Microsoft’s optional update KB5031455 in October 2023); Windows 10 and most phones need extra software.
Your files stay on this device
This converter runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded. When you add your first archive, the page fetches its engine, a WebAssembly build of libarchive of about 1 MB, from zipconvert.com. Your TAR.BZ2 file is then read from disk and rewritten as ZIP inside the tab. To check, open DevTools, switch to the Network tab and convert a file: apart from those engine files, no request carries it. The privacy policy covers the rest of the site.
Table of Use: TAR.BZ2 to ZIP by kind of file
| Your file | What to do | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| A .tar.bz2 source release or backup | Drop it and press Convert to ZIP | A ZIP with the same folders and files |
| A file ending .tbz2, .tbz or .tb2 | The same steps; these are alternative extensions | The same result, because the format is read from the contents |
| A research data set of CSV tables | Convert it, then open the files | A ZIP any spreadsheet user can open; the CSVs also feed the CSV to JSON converter |
| An archive with the wrong extension, such as bzip2 data named .tar.gz | Drop it anyway | The bzip2 signature (“BZh”) is recognised, so the name does not matter |
| A single file compressed with bzip2, such as data.csv.bz2 | Decompress it with bzip2, 7-Zip or Keka | The converter reports a single compressed file, not a tarball, and writes nothing |
| A download that ended early | Download it again | A “damaged or incomplete” message (truncated bzip2 input); no ZIP is written |
ZIP’s Deflate is weaker than bzip2, so expect a larger file; PDFs and JPEGs inside barely change size. Mirrors usually list a checksum beside each download, which the file hash calculator can check before you convert.
Features
- Unpacks bzip2 and TAR in the tab. libarchive 3.7.2, compiled to WebAssembly, decompresses the bzip2 stream and reads the TAR inside. The format is recognised from the “BZh” signature in the first bytes, not the extension.
- Notices damage. A truncated bzip2 stream stops with “truncated bzip2 input”, and a changed byte in the middle stops with a damaged-archive message. In both cases no ZIP is written.
- Reads old dialects and keeps the folder tree. Version 7, ustar, GNU and pax headers are all read, including long paths. Folders (including empty ones), dates, Unix permissions and symbolic links go into the ZIP, and hard links become copies.
- Reports what cannot be stored. Device files, named pipes and sockets cannot be stored in a ZIP. The result summary lists them with the reason, along with any duplicate path that was renamed.
- Clear limits. Bare .bz2 files are refused with an explanation, a warning appears above 1 GB, and anything over 2 GB is declined before conversion.
The RAR to ZIP converter and the ISO to ZIP converter cover two other formats that older systems cannot open.
How to convert TAR.BZ2 to ZIP, step by step
Add the archive
Drag the .tar.bz2, .tbz2 or .tbz onto the box labelled “Drop TAR.BZ2 files here or click to browse”, or click the box and choose the file. The converter identifies it from the bzip2 signature and starts fetching its engine, about 1 MB, when the first archive is added.
Keep “Convert to” on ZIP
A “Convert to” menu appears under the file list with ZIP selected. TAR, TAR.GZ and GZIP (single file) are in the same menu, and “Keep macOS metadata files” stays unticked unless you need them.
Press Convert to ZIP
The row shows a progress bar while the archive is unpacked. If the file is a bare .bz2 or is damaged, the row turns red with the reason instead.
Download the ZIP
Click the button with the new name, such as survey-data.zip. The summary below counts files, folders and links and lists anything renamed, skipped or cleaned.
Everything else works the same on the home page converter.
Who can use it
- Researchers and students. Older data sets and source releases on university mirrors are often .tar.bz2.
- Windows 10 and phone users. You can open the archive without finding and installing a bzip2 tool.
- Anyone restoring an old backup. A tarball written by a Linux backup script years ago opens as a ZIP in any file manager.
- People with unpublished data. Research data and drafts are unpacked in your tab, not on a conversion server.
FAQs
How do I open a .tar.bz2 file on Windows or Mac?
Drag the .tar.bz2 onto the converter on this page, keep ZIP selected and press Convert to ZIP, then open the ZIP with a double-click. The bzip2 layer and the TAR inside are unpacked in your browser tab, so nothing is installed. Windows 10 and most phones have no built-in support for the format.
Are .tbz2, .tbz and .tar.bz2 the same thing?
Yes. All three are a TAR archive compressed with bzip2; the shorter names come from systems that preferred a single extension. The converter checks the file’s contents, so any of the names works, and so does a tarball that was renamed by mistake. The ZIP it writes is named after the file without that ending.
Can it open a plain .bz2 file that is not a tarball?
No. The engine reads bzip2-compressed tarballs but cannot unwrap a bare .bz2 stream that holds one file, such as data.csv.bz2. You get a message that no TAR archive could be read inside the compressed file, and nothing is written. Decompress such a file with bzip2, 7-Zip or Keka.
Will the folder structure be the same as with tar -xjf?
Yes. Paths are taken from the TAR headers just as tar reads them, including long paths stored in pax or GNU extension records, and empty folders are written as folder entries so they survive extraction. Hard links become full copies, and device files or named pipes are listed in the summary rather than converted.
Does the TAR.BZ2 converter upload my archive?
No. The conversion runs in your browser. The page fetches its engine files from zipconvert.com when you add the first archive, and your file is then read from disk and unpacked in the tab. You can verify this in the Network tab of DevTools: no request carries your archive, which suits unpublished research data.
Why is the ZIP bigger than the .tar.bz2?
bzip2 compresses the whole tarball as one block-sorted stream, while ZIP compresses each file separately with Deflate, which finds less redundancy. The data is identical. In our test the react-dom 18.3.1 package was 776 KB as .tar.bz2 and 1.15 MB as ZIP. Files that were already compressed barely change.
